"HAZWOPER" is the abbrieviation of the name of the 29 CFR 1910.120 regulation titled "HAZardous Waste OPerations and Emergency Response." This regulation seeks to protect workers engaged in hazardous waste cleanup, handling and emergency response to incidents involving hazardous materials. Training is required for all employees who handle or use flamables, corrosive, poisonous or reactive chemicals.

If your company's emergency response plan requires you to be able to recognize that you have a hazmat release, tell someone about it and then keep people out of the area, than you are what the regulation calls a First Responder at the Awareness level.
