FAU
and the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) have collaborated to
develop a basic program that introduces you to reading, understanding and using
blueprints in the construction industry. The program consists of a comprehensive blueprint
reading course and an inclusive estimating course. The Blueprint Reading course includes an excellent introduction to construction terminology and the process
of building.
Blueprint
Reading
This course begins with the basics of blueprint reading for both residential and commercial projects. Students will learn to read common symbols, notations, line weights and types, calculate the scale of a drawing and understand the language and abbreviations used in construction plans. Architectural, site, and structural plans will be covered in detail. Students will get a brief introduction to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and landscape drawings. By the completion of this course students will have a working knowledge of the elements within a project and the associated interrelationships. Course materials are provided including engineering scales and sample blueprints.

Estimating
This course prepares students for basic interpretation and understanding of the estimating process including the seven levels of an estimate, organizing take offs, and summarization. A basic knowledge of blueprint reading is required. Learn how to recognize the elements within a project and the associated interrelationships as they relate to costs. A brief introduction will be given regarding the use of excel to estimate a project. Course study focuses on CSI Divisions and students will learn how to develop an estimate from CSI Division 2 through 14 touching on 15 and 16. Course materials are provided.
